Things to do in Richmond VA
Richmond may once have been the Capital of the Confederacy that the South burned to keep the Union from raiding their supplies, but today it’s a bustling city steeped in history and full of world-class universities, museums and trendy neighborhoods with a Bohemian flair.
Long the home of the Powhatan tribe, the first English settlers reached Richmond in 1607 when Captain Christopher Newport and fellow explorers sailed up the James River and planted a cross on an island in the section of the river that now flows downtown. From historic St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry gave his “Give me Liberty or Give me Death” speech, to Belle Isle that served as a Civil War prison to Hollywood Cemetery where Presidents and thousands of Confederate soldiers are buried and where you can get the best view of the James River, Richmond offers over 400 years of American history.
Richmond is also home to Virginia Commonwealth University and the Medical College of Virginia one of the nation’s top teaching institutions. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts houses one of the most impressive collections of Faberg’e objects in the country as well as the largest group of Imperical Easter Eggs outside Russia. The James River offers the only Class III and IV rapids in an urban setting and some of the best smallmouth bass fishing to be found anywhere along the East Coast.
Richmond’s location makes it an ideal place to live, work and play. Richmond is two hours south of the nation’s Capital to the north. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean is a two hour drive and two hours to the west takes you to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
