Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 and is a 8,000-acre fresh water refuge bordering Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the barrier islands feature large sand dunes, maritime forests, fresh water marshes, ponds, ocean beach, and large impoundments for wintering wildfowl.

False Cape State Park

False Cape State Park is part of The Outer Banks of Virginia, and lies on the Currituck Banks Peninsula, which is a mile-wide barrier spit between the Back Bay of the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. The park adjoins the state border with North Carolina and lies shortly north of Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge. It is one of the remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic Coast. Please note that there is no public vehicular access to the park.

Formerly Seashore State Park, First Landing State Park is the site of the landing of the first English Colonists in 1607. Built in part by an all African-American Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-1940, the park is a National Natural Landmark and National Historic Landmark and is Virginia’s most-visited state park.

McDonald’s Holiday Lights at the Beach
On the Boardwalk between 2nd and 34th Streets annually.

2013 Dates: November 22, 2013 through January 1, 2014

Take a shiny journey into nautical, holiday, and adventure lands – all along the beautiful Virginia Beach boardwalk. Festive fish, jumping dolphins, frolicking porpoises – all in bright, colored lights against the clear night-time sky, are the stars of McDonald’s Holiday Lights at the Beach. They are joined by Santa, elves, and a 40-foot tall Christmas tree. Over 30,000 families a year make this unique light show a part of their holiday celebration!

McDonald’s Holiday Lights at the Beach opens nightly beginning at 5:30. Hours of operation are 5:30pm-10:00pm Sunday through Thursday and 5:30pm-11:00pm Friday-Saturday.

Mount Trashmore Park

Also known as just Mount Trashmore, Mount Trashmore Park is a city park covering 165 acres with two man-made mountains, two lakes, playgrounds and a skate path. Mount Trashmore was made by compacing layers of solid waste and clean soil.

 

Virginia Beach Boardwalk
Summer means beaches and boardwalks. Enjoy the 28-feet wide boardwalk that stretches three miles along the coast. The walk features a separate bike path for biking and surrey rentals. Summer nights see entertainment offered at four oceanfront stages located at 7th, 17th, and 24th and 31st Streets.

 

Verizon Wireless American Music Festival
Held annually. 2014 Dates August 29, 2014 to August 31, 2014

Located on stages at 7th, 17th, and 24th and 31st Streets.

Enjoy the sounds of rock, jazz, country, R&B and more over Labor Day Weekend. This is one of the largest outdoor music events on the East Coast. Performers in 2013 included Daughtry, Barenaked Ladies, Third Eye Blind, Three Dog Night, Edgar Winter, Modern English, Sugar Ray, WAR, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
