Virginia Beach is the City formerly known as Princess Anne County and sits at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The City has the Guinness Book of Records title for having the longest pleasure beach in the world. The coastline of Virginia Beach stretches from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel southward to the North Carolina Border.
It was at Cape Henry where English colonists first landed on April 26, 1607. Captain Christopher Newport landed there with 105 men and boys before traveling further inland to found the first permanent settlement at Jamestown.
Virginia Beach has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are mild and snow is rare. Summers are hot and humid.
Virginia Beach is mainly known as a tourist destination, but the military and agribusiness are significant contributors to the economy.
U.S. Military bases located in Virginia Beach include the U.S. Navy’s NAS Oceana and Training Support Center Hampton Roads, and the Joint Expeditionary Base East located at Cape Henry. NAB Little Creek has a Norfolk address but is located mostly within the city limits of Virginia Beach.
